"They are doing really well now and enjoying the holiday," added the source, suggesting an extra special Christmas gift for Kirsten is right around the corner.
According to the insider, Hedlund recently moved in with Spider-Man Starl who has "strengthened their relationship."
The news of a soon-to-be engagement comes after Kirsten opened up publicly about her thoughts on the timing of marriage and children.
Kirsten has admitted she feels pressure from her mother to move to the next step in life.
She said: "You do not know what will happen over the next 10 years."
"But I will be asked to question a lot because I'm in my thirties and it's like: time to get married and have kids, right? That's the vibe. Well, I already have a mom to ask these questions, so no need another that! "
In an interview with Red magazine during the summer, On the Road, the star told the publication: "I'm in baby mode, because two of my really good friends is pregnant right now.
"I think 33 is a good age to have your first child."
The beautiful duo met in 2011 while co-starring in On The Road, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's novel of the same name.
Now, Garrett can be seen in Angelina Jolie's hotly-anticipated prisoner of war biopic Unbroken, out in theatres on Christmas day.
Hedlund is also currently working on thriller Mojave and family adventure film Pan, in which he plays Hook opposite Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and Rooney Mara.
Kirsten has been busy filming the second season of FX's Fargo as well as sci-fi drama Midnight Special, out in November.
